In your Unreal2\System folder is a program called GlmEd.exe. This is Golem Studio (or "GolemEd", as the folks at Legend often call it). Run this program from the folder it resides in (the System folder).
If this is your first time running GlmEd, you should see an empty fullscreen window, with a menu at the top. This is because you have not yet set up a workspace for Golem to use. Golem operates on all of the mesh data for a project (like Unreal2) within a single "workspace", based on a given root folder (in this case, Unreal2\Meshes).
Go to File -> New Workspace to bring up the New Workspace file dialog box. Golem workspace files end in the .GWS extension. If you are running this from your Unreal2\System folder, you will probably notice a "U2.gws" file already present in the folder. DO NOT OVERWRITE THIS FILE. Instead, name your new workspace file something else, like U2Edit.gws. Once you've done this, hit OK.
The New Workspace box will appear, with fields like "Title" and "Root Folder". Change the title to whatever you like, such as "Unreal 2 Editing" (this name is displayed in the title bar and workspace window while the workspace is open, but has no effect on the rest of the program). Next, hit the "Change" button for the "Root Folder" option, and change it to your Unreal2\Meshes folder (for example, if you installed the game in C:\Games\Unreal2, you should pick C:\Games\Unreal2\Meshes). Leave the other options at their defaults ("Use Workspace Root Folder" is checked, and "Connect to VSS Database" is unchecked), and hit OK.
The workspace should now load up a series of files, after which three windows should appear near the upper-left corner of your screen.
Troubleshooting: If at this point you get a DirectX device error, please make sure that DirectX 8.1 or higher is installed, and that your video drivers are up-to-date. If you're still encountering this error and you're running Windows XP, please wait for a Golem update scheduled for later this week that should help resolve the problem.
The three windows that appear are called the "Entity Window", "Workspace Window", and "Render Window". Feel free to move them wherever you like on your screen. You can also resize the workspace window and render window however you like (although it is recommended that you keep the render window in roughly the same 4:3 aspect ratio as it originally appears).
Once you're happy with your workspace layout, go to the File -> Preferences menu to bring up the Preferences dialog box. Enable the "Automatically reload last workspace at startup" option. You can also change the render window background color here as well, for the next time you run GlmEd (I personally use a dark blue color, RGB 0,0,160). Once you're done, hit OK.
At this point, Exit GlmEd, either by clicking the X button in the upper-right corner, or using the File -> Exit option. This will save your workspace so it will remember the window settings, as well as preserve it as the "last workspace" for automatic reloading.
If everything worked ok, you should now be able to run GlmEd.exe again, and your workspace should reload on its own, coming right back to the window positions you requested.
